Wastewater Pumping Station Upgrade

Aqua‑Tech was engaged to carry out a full upgrade of a wastewater pumping station in North Scone, Perth. The works involved replacing critical mechanical and electrical components to improve performance, reliability, and long-term asset integrity.

The project required careful planning and execution to ensure continuity of service and to mitigate any risk of flooding or system disruption during the upgrade works.

Objectives

  • Replace ageing pumps, pipework, and variable speed drives (VSDs)
  • Improve system performance and flow capacity
  • Ensure safe and compliant delivery within a live operational environment
  • Future-proof the station ahead of ongoing use and adoption

Challenge

  • Maintaining continuous operation during pump and pipework replacement
  • Working within a live wastewater environment with flooding risk
  • Addressing existing issues such as water ingress, corrosion, and restricted access within the valve chamber
  • Accommodating larger, higher-capacity equipment within existing infrastructure constraints

Solution Implemented

Aqua‑Tech carried out a structured upgrade programme, beginning with a full site review to establish a suitable over-pumping arrangement, ensuring uninterrupted operation throughout the works.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Replacement of both pumps and associated pipework with new 150mm systems
  • Installation and connection of both lines to a new flowmeter system
  • Complete renewal of electrical terminations, using sealed solutions to prevent future water ingress
  • Upgrade and replacement of both VSDs to support increased pump capacity
  • Uprating electrical infrastructure including fuses and panel configurations
  • Replacement and repositioning of joint boxes within the valve chamber to improve access and reliability
  • Sealing of cable ducts and testing of all new pipework to ensure leak-free operation

Additional preparatory works, including jetting of the wet well and valve chamber, were undertaken to ensure a clean and safe working environment prior to installation.

Outcome

  • Both pumps successfully installed and returned to automatic operation
  • Achieved strong, consistent flow performance from both pumps (25 l/s each)
  • Improved overall system reliability and operational efficiency
  • Reduced risk of future failures through upgraded materials and sealed electrical systems
  • Delivered a safer, more accessible and maintainable pumping station

Summary

This project demonstrates Aqua‑Tech’s ability to deliver end-to-end pumping station upgrades within live operational environments. Safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption.

By combining mechanical, electrical, and operational expertise, Aqua‑Tech ensured the North Scone asset was not only restored, but significantly enhanced for long-term performance and reliability.

“Aqua-Tech has seamlessly fit into our project team, quickly becoming an indispensable part of the process. They’ve taken a lot of our headaches away by managing the technical complexities and ensuring everything aligns with our client’s expectations.”
