Freshwater Operative
Reporting to the Site Manager, the Operative will work under the direction of the Senior Operative to complete daily operational tasks within the RAS units.
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety
- Follow safe working practices to ensure a safe working environment for all employees.
- Adhere to the Group Health & Safety policy.
- Contribute to a workplace culture that prioritizes health and safety by:
- Following all instructions given.
- Using the “Good Catch” system.
- Being aware of the Monthly 100 system.
- Reporting incidents as per SSC H&S procedures.
- Ensuring personal actions do not put oneself or others at risk.
- Monitoring site health and safety and recommending improvements where necessary.
Technical Standards
- Operate to the highest standards of husbandry, biosecurity, food safety, and quality.
- Support the Site Manager and Senior Operatives in embedding these standards throughout the site.
Fish Husbandry and Welfare
- Check conditions of holding units.
- Maintain and adjust environmental controls, including monitoring and controlling water flows and quality.
- Monitor and record environmental parameters.
- Handle fish during routine operations and recognize signs of stress.
- Ensure fish welfare standards are met.
- Perform husbandry operations such as grading, vaccination, transfers, and stocking fish into holding units.
- Conduct specialist operations like salt testing, ATPase sampling, salt dosing, and programming fish counters.
- Identify and rectify signs and causes of stress in fish.
- Respond to alarm situations.
Fish Health
- Adhere to site biosecurity protocols.
- Collect, prepare, and analyze routine samples.
- Treat health problems in fish.
RAS Systems
- Identify technical faults and requirements within the system and report to the Senior Operative.
- Perform corrective actions on faulty equipment and systems within individual capabilities and training status.
- Operate systems and equipment as required for specific activities such as fish handling systems.
Environmental Stewardship
- Measure and record environmental conditions accurately.
- Identify stress in fish and signs of predator activity, minimizing impact through maintenance of holding units.
- Participate in environmental consents in accordance with legislation.
- Collect and input data for containment audits.
- Monitor site production plans in relation to environmental consents, analyze data, and report deviations.
Site Operations
- Meet the highest quality standards, following all SOPs.
Feed, Feeding, Fish Growth and Development
- Receive and store feed, recording quantities.
- Perform and record sample weights, calculate average sample weights, biomass, and condition factors.
- Feed fish according to the feed plan and assess feed intake.
- Adapt feed plans based on environmental conditions.
- Input basic data into FishTalk and analyze data as requested.
- Perform specialist tasks related to fish development.
Systems Maintenance and Structures
- Check conditions of holding units.
- Respond to emergencies as per company procedures.
- Identify and report required maintenance during daily checks.
- Lift, transfer, and position loads and control equipment.
- Adhere to Company Approved Contractor procedures.
Transfer and Sales
- Follow site biosecurity protocols.
- Assist with preparation of equipment and transport tanks for stock transfers.
- Monitor and accurately record environmental parameters.
- Prepare and transport fish, adjusting operations in response to changing environmental conditions.
- Perform specialist tasks related to fish development.
Measurement & Control
- Understand site KPIs and support the team in using these KPIs to improve site performance.
Personal and Workforce Development
- Attend all required courses and operate machinery only when authorized and trained to do so.
- Work professionally with others.
- Develop and maintain personal performance.
- Participate in the performance appraisal process.
- Demonstrate good interpersonal, team-building, and, where applicable, team-leading skills.
- Provide feedback to the site manager when requested.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
- Sound understanding of Health and Safety issues.
- Interest in aquaculture and fish husbandry.
- Responsible attitude.
- Ability to work weekends, on-call rotas, and flexible hours as workload dictates.
Preferable Criteria:
- Technical expertise in aquaculture and fish husbandry, preferably with previous RAS experience.
- Good practical skills.
- Team player with experience working cooperatively within a team.
- Good standard of fitness and excellent attendance record.
- Demonstrated good numeric and IT skills.
